Halloween Costumes- A Rant

Yesterday I was browsing around a local halloween store for costume ideas. I was sickened, however by how skimpy a lot of them were, and the worst ones were marketed toward teens!
Any other day of the year they would be considered borderline-pornographic, and yet this is what we're encouraging our youth to wear?
I tried on a Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz) costume and it didn't even make it half way down my thigh! If I had bent over I would have flashed everyone.
Dorothy is portrayed as a child! She's not a prostitute, so why are they selling costumes that head that direction? L. Frank Baum would be rolling in his grave if he saw that.
Gah! It just grinds my gears. Is this what halloween is about now? Looking as "sexy" as possible?

Anyway, it really really bothers me. But speaking of halloween, what are you guys going as, if anything? Any ideas for my costume?
Comment! Discuss my incoherent ranting. You know you want to.

  1. It's bothered me for years that Halloween has been marketed more and more toward adults in general, not kids. I just refused to take part(as a family) in it. It's not fun, it's either ugly or, as you say, pornographic.
I know your party will be neither. : )

  2. I personally have a collection of "good" halloween costumes that cover....well....all of you. I'm thinking that this year I will sew one though...and I should probably start. I think I will either go as a medieval princess (reverting back to my 6 yr. old self) or someone from Sweeny Todd.
If you know how to sew, there are some really great costume patterns out there. You could also go to Goodwill or Value Village and find either an older (and less skimpy) costume or the materials to design your own.
I'll get back to you on ideas of what to be. My brain is full of chemistry and I'd probably suggest you be an atom or an electron or something odd like that.

.....or you could dress as Shakespeare..
    ......or a geeky math professor......
    .....or go with a classic.....
.....or just be a cardboard box......
.....or a uke......(how do you dress up like a uke???).......
......or you could be oliver twist.....
......or another random character from a book.......
    ...or a movie....
.....or you could dress up like a movie.....

    anyways I'm done now.

  3. Halloween has always been one of my favorite times of the year, but it has been about and for children. I'm glad there are still people like me who prefer Halloween as a fun friendly holiday. I like going to the costume stores to get ideas and the occasional prop/accessory, but this last trip was truly horrifying.
    Great rant Dot!

  4. Ugh, I know...costumes like that drive me crazy. Especially when it's marketed towards 13-year-old girls. Gah.
Which is why making your own costume is so much better! :)
